Driving Confidence Pass Plus

Help newly qualified drives obtain the vital experience to enhance their skills

Why the course?
Pass Plus is a voluntary training course designed by the DSA for newly qualified drivers. It consists of 6 modules which emphasise on developing your practical driving skills.

As a newly qualified driver you’re much more vulnerable than you may realise. More importantly statistics show that new drivers are more likely to have an accident within the first two years of passing their driving test than at any other time in their driving experience.

Newly qualified drivers are at a higher than average risk whatever their age. The main cause is simply a lack of driving experience. To counteract this problem the PASS PLUS course has been designed to give you valuable specialist tuition by developing your skills and boosting your confidence.

The Pass Plus course was designed to help counteract this problem and give the inexperienced newly qualified driver valuable professional tuition.

The benefits of PASS PLUS to you are:

  • That it facilitates you to gain a quality driving experience safely
  • It assists you to become a more skilful driver
  • It minimises your risk of being involved in an accident
  • It saves you money on your car insurance premiums.*

*All you need to do is to produce your certificate (which is given to you when you pass the course) to those insurance companies who participate in the scheme.

Module 6:
MOTORWAYS

Being a new driver, you may never have driven on a motorway. Motorways are unlike any other road, not only because of the number of lanes, the high traffic volumes and vehicle speeds, but due to the fact there are also rules and signs that specifically relate to motorways only.

Invaluable training and experience in driving on motorways will be given to you through PASS PLUS.

Whilst you will have gained some helpful experience on dual carriageways, this will not have covered aspects specific to motorways. It is therefore essential in the event that there is no motorway nearby that this session will have to be covered in theory.

If this is the case, it is recommended that you should plan to drive on a motorway as soon as possible after the course, in order to put into practice the knowledge you have obtained from the course. This theory session like any other will need to be completed to an achieved standard.

The following topics will be covered in this session:

  • planning journeys in advance
  • joining and leaving motorways
  • use of safe speeds in different circumstances
  • effective observation through the use of all mirrors, blind spots, scanning the near, middle and far distance
  • signs, signals and markings
  • overtaking and lane discipline
  • being courteous to other road users
  • motorway fatigue
  • procedure in the event of a breakdown
  • use of lights, including hazard warning lights
  • debris on the carriageway
  • crosswinds.
